Travel Essential: DSRL or Point and Shoot Camera?

Ive been deliberating with self if I need to get a DSLR camera as a travel essential or stick to my point and shoot camera at the moment.  Undeniably, DSLR will take the lead but there are other points I need to consider.

I was reading Three Essential Photo Tips on National Geographic which obviously favors DSLRs as opposed to Point and Shoot cameras. However, I think that the three tips mentioned are too narrow.  There might be some truths in them but taking great photos cannot be summarized in those three tips.

Its true, they capture amazing photos but for me there is another element in it that does not come with the camera no matter how high the price isand thats the skill. I feel that I would be wasting my money if I bought a DSLR camera and I didnt know how to use it. And I dont have money to waste in the first place.

I love photography and my passion started with taking photos of myself and my friends.  Then I learned how to take macro shots and I fell more deeply in love with this hobby. Now I dont take photos of myself anymore but other subjects like flowers, bees and butterflies. I find it really relaxing and rewarding. As much as I hate snows and winter chills, I was surprised one cold morning when I was out braving the freezing temperature while taking macro shots. I was completely unmindful of the cold when in fact winters could propel me to depression or reduce me to tears at the least. But definitely not when Im taking photos.

With my plan to travel more often and take photos, I am beginning to feel the pressure of owning a DSLR especially for photographing views from a distance. But its still out of my budget. However, I find my point and shoot camera doing a good job for the meantime. Its true, its not just the camera, its the skill, more importantly.
